Towards biological jeopardy. What waits for Ukraine tomorrow?
The Decree № 114 “On approval of order on state registry of genetically modified organisms sources in food, cosmetic and medical substance, which contain such organisms or made out of it” adopted on 18th February, 2009 by Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine became one more step which hold Ukraine away from enforcement of the effective biological safety system.

New GM-maize for Russian consumers
As became recently known this summer Russian science and research Institute of Nutrition approved using GM corn MON 88017, resistant to glyphosate pesticide and rootworm, in food industry and for sale.

Debates around GMO labeling going on in Russia
Companies, deputies and some NGOs are now lobbying to change GMO labeling legislation. According to Russian Consumer Protection Law all food containing GMOs must be labeled. The law does not define any threshold. According to this law no GMOs allowed to be present in products without special indication.

Moscow GMO free labeling system started working
Although many food companies and lobbyists criticized the initiative of Moscow Mayor (who recently introduced volunteer GMO free labeling with 0% tolerance to GMOs for manufacturers selling their products in Moscow), new labeling system was successfully launched this summer. According to Moscow Department of Consumer Market, by August 30 companies and more than 100 brands where certified as GMO free and will have special green label. The Department reports that 100 companies asked for such GMO free label and now their applications are under consideration.

NGOs call for liberation of Kazakhstan from GMOs
On August 1, in Almaty, Kazakhstan local NGOs - Foundation for Integration of Ecological Culture – FIEC (member of CIS Alliance for Biosafety) and Kazakh Consumer League demanded to stop selling the lot of Nestle baby food, containing GMOs and called for declaring moratorium on GMOs in the country.

Second in Russia antiGMO youth camp was held near Tomsk (Western Siberia) this summer. First one took place last year in Murmansk on Kola Peninsula.

New Biosafety Law in Ukraine: Effort to Regulate or to Legalize GMOs?
On June 15 President of Ukraine Victor Yuschenko signed national law “On state biosafety system of creation, trials, transportation and use of GMOs”.

Head of Russia’s capital called for moratorium on GMOs and suggested adopting federal biosafety law this autumn.

Russian GM lobbyists lost in court
On May 30 the Moscow district court delivered a judgment against Arkadiy Zlochevskiy, leader of the Russian Grain Union and binded him and the magazine "Ecology and Life" to compensate moral damage to Russian scientist, professor Vladimir Kuznetsov and to publish a disclaimer.
